It’s finally happening: Two years after New York’s first legal adult-use cannabis sale, the state is implementing its official seed-to-sale traceability system. According to the state’s Office of Cannabis Management, licensed retailers will need to provide the name and contact information for their inventory tracking system vendor by January 17, 2025.
What Does This Mean?
Seed-to-sale tracking follows the lifecycle of every legally grown cannabis plant from the time it is planted all the way through harvest, processing, packaging, lab testing, and sale to a consumer. For licensed New York cannabis retailers, it means you must secure an electronic inventory tracking system that can integrate with the state’s seed-to-sale system to remain compliant.
New York’s Office of Cannabis Management recently released the application programming interface (API) to allow integration with BioTrack, the state’s contracted seed-to-sale system.
What Do New York Cannabis Retailers Need to Do?
The first thing to do is evaluate your point of sale (POS) system. If your current provider is not prepared to integrate with New York’s seed-to-sale system (BioTrack), you will need to secure one that is no later than January 17, 2025.
It’s important to note, the January 17th deadline is for licensees to report their chosen inventory tracking software to the OCM, along with an estimated date for the completion of integration. This is not the date integration is expected to be complete. A reputable software provider can provide you with an estimated date, but actual timelines will be determined by how and when BioTrack releases additional information.
