Award-Winning Retail Software With BioTrack Compliance for New Mexico Built-In

New Mexico issues cannabis licenses with no statewide cap, and the results show it: more than 550 dispensaries now compete for a market that has contracted about 7% over two years, with border towns like Sunland Park driving an outsized share of sales. For operators, standing out and running lean matters more than ever.

Cova POS + Payments helps New Mexico retailers do both. Twice named Retail Software of the Year (2024 & 2025 Emjay International Cannabis Awards) and trusted by 2,200+ retailers across North America, Cova delivers full two-way BioTrack integration, built-in ID scanning and purchase-limit tracking, and cashless payment options — all under one platform. Paired with record-setting reliability and in-house support to keep lines moving and margins intact.

"If you're actually trying to get great customer service, efficiency, and all the analytics and data you need, go with Cova. Really easy decision."

How Cova Supports New Mexico Cannabis Dispensaries

Two-Way BioTrack Sync

Cova's two-way BioTrack integration submits sales and refunds as they happen and pushes inventory adjustments to the state system automatically, so your numbers match the CCD's without manual re-entry. Anything that fails to submit gets recorded, retries every eight hours for 48 hours, and can be resubmitted manually. Cova has built and maintained traceability integrations across more than 20 markets in the United States alone, including state platform changes.

Medical and Adult-Use Workflows

Serve registered patients and adult-use customers from the same register. Cova reads patient credentials, flags expired cards, and calculates product equivalency against each program's limits so budtenders don’t have to manually. A purchase limit gauge shows remaining allowance before tender, and anti-looping protection enforces limits across your stores and multiple transactions rather than one at a time.

Inventory Management

Manage your New Mexico dispensary with robust inventory management features including bulk import, bulk edit, mass product adjustments, PO imports, and more. Save time and money by setting up automations for repetitive, error-prone work. Centralize inventory control and visibility across your entire operation and locations.

Multi-Location Management

New Mexico sets no cap on how many cannabis licenses. Nothing stops retailers from opening a second store, or a tenth – and Cova makes it easy as well. Cova gives retailers one product catalog with per-location pricing, ability to transfer stock between locations, and comprehensive insights into all locations from one dashboard.

Cova Pay

Cova Pay gives New Mexico retailers ACH, integrated debit through a cashless ATM solution, Apple Pay and Google Wallet, plus branded gift cards — all reconciling directly against the POS. Cova reports customers who pay digitally spend around 25% more, and that integrated payments cut reconciliation time by up to 80%.

“We have the largest variety of cannabis products with 96 strains of flower, but Cova’s inventory management system makes it simple to import and export everything smoothly."

New Mexico Point-of-Sale FAQ

Is New Mexico replacing BioTrack, and what does that mean for my dispensary?

New Mexico is reportedly preparing to replace BioTrack with a new state traceability platform developed by local contractor Real Time Solutions (RTS). The Cannabis Control Division has not yet published a detailed rollout plan, and implementation discussions are ongoing, so the timeline and requirements may change. The transition is currently anticipated to begin around September 1, 2026.

Retailers may receive a transition or grace period, but no details have been confirmed. How smoothly dispensaries adapt will depend partly on how quickly their POS provider can accommodate the new API and reporting requirements. Cova is closely monitoring developments and preparing to support the new platform once its final technical specifications are released, helping New Mexico retailers minimize disruption.

Should I wait to choose a POS until the new traceability system launches?

No, there hasn’t been an official announcement yet and waiting to choose a POS leaves you doing the migration and a POS implementation at the same time. The more useful step is to pick a POS provider with a track record of shipping state traceability integrations on regulator timelines. Retailers on free or minimal BioTrack setups are the most exposed here, since they have the least support behind them when the state system changes so it's best to pick a POS with out-of-the-box integrations and a track record of great support.

How does Cova POS simplify compliance for New Mexico cannabis retailers?

Cova's integrated ID scanner verifies customer age and flags invalid or expired New Mexico patient cards. A purchase limit gauge shows budtenders adult-use limits and medical patient allotments, and won’t let them oversell. This automation reduces human error and the risk of infractions, fines, or license suspension. The back-end Cova hub allows dispensary owners to set operational hours, cap discounts, and assign employee permissions.

What level of integration does Cova have with BioTrack?

Cova offers full API integration and 2-way sync with BioTrack, iNew Mexico’s marijuana traceability system. All sales and refunds are reported per CCD requirements. All inventory adjustments in Cova POS are also synced automatically with BioTrack, as part of Cova automations – cutting manual work and human error. You can use any cannabis POS that integrates with BioTrack and are not required to use Biotrack’s own POS system.

What hardware and operating system does Cova use?

Cova POS uses a back-end web-based hub and a front-of-house touchscreen sales tool for budtenders. The back-end management portion will run on any device (PC, Mac, laptop, desktop). The budtender sales tools run on Android tablets, which can free your sales team from behind the counter to meet customers anywhere on the floor, and even take orders on the go – cutting wait times. Cova makes hardware recommendations rather than selling you a specific tablet, so you can shop for the best price and right fit for your dispensary.

Why is Cova eCommerce better than online menu providers?

An integrated cannabis eCommerce solution like Cova eComm provides a seamless user experience, allowing customers to browse, add items to the cart, and complete purchases within a single platform. It also facilitates centralized management, letting dispensaries owners easily update product listings, inventory levels, pricing, and more from a single administration panel. Additionally, a native eCommerce solution like Cova allows Google to crawl your dispensary menus and website, making your business appear in organic search results, which augments your product SEO efforts, unlike third-party providers that use iFrame menus.

What kind of training and ongoing support does Cova offer New Mexico dispensaries?

Cova is known for and recommended for its unparalleled support. Our dedicated launch teams offer software training and onboarding – based on expert insights and industry best practices learned from working with hundreds of cannabis retailers across North America. We’ll flag mistakes to avoid and set you on course with confidence from tech recommendations to operational strategies. From launch day to everyday operations, our ongoing support team is available via phone, chat, or email, with remarkable response time (an average of 51s) and we’re always on-call 24/7 for emergency support.

How does Cova POS help with inventory management and auditing?

Cova POS is optimized for inventory management with convenient features like batch scanning and bulk adjustments, saving New Mexico retailers time and improving accuracy. Cova’s reorder report forecasts days of stock remaining so you can replenish fast-moving products efficiently. Our Rooms feature lets retailers assign inventory to different locations in the same store, like the back room and the sales floor, making it easier to manage FIFO and count products before audits. Learn more from Cova's Ultimate Guide to Cannabis Retail Inventory Management.

Do cannabis retailers in New Mexico need to use BioTrack POS?

No, cannabis retailers in New Mexico are not required to use the BioTrack POS system but they are required to report into the state-designated traceability system. In other words, retailers can select any point of sale (POS) system that supports the required traceability workflows, which as of July 2026 is BioTrack but may change in the future..

That said, a cannabis-specific POS, like Cova POS, comes with compliance features like a built-in ID scanner for quick check-ins, seamless inventory management, and lightning-fast transactions. Cova streamlines operations, enhances customer interactions and delivers business insights – from scheduling budtenders to optimizing inventory for better turnover.
